Scott Hanson isn’t alone in believing that Tom Brady should exhibit more enthusiasm.
As the globally acclaimed host of ‘NFL Red Zone’ on the NFL Network, Hanson’s opinions carry weight.
When Hanson made a teasing remark about Brady during live commentary, it certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
“Oh come on,” Hanson commented. “Brady has to show more excitement than that in the booth.”
Numerous fans echoed this sentiment, criticizing Brady’s subdued delivery and peculiar conversational tone while covering the Dallas Cowboys‘ 33-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
“There was so much awkward silence from Tom Brady during the first quarter of his broadcast,” tweeted one fan.
Another user pointed out, “Tom Brady struggles to string together sentences with any normal rhythm.”
“Just a heads up, and I know it’s early, but Greg Olsen is handling this much better than Tom Brady,” a third user remarked.
Hanson’s comments came after Dallas kicker Brandon Aubrey attempted a remarkable 66-yard field goal before halftime.
The kick was successful and would have tied an NFL record, but a penalty nullified it. During the ensuing discussion, Brady largely overlooked Aubrey’s impressive performance.
As the Cowboys prepared for a potential 71-yard attempt, Brady seemed more concerned about the Browns’ strategy rather than acknowledging the significant kick.
“They need to cover if it doesn’t go in,” Brady remarked calmly.
A timeout ensued, which halted the record attempt.
While FOX co-host Kevin Burkhardt marveled at the surreal prospect of a 71-yard kick, Brady maintained his stoic demeanor, suppressing any enthusiasm.
“Maybe everyone will reconsider this one,” the seven-time Super Bowl champion stated.
As Hanson’s critical comments circulated online, he quickly took to social media to clarify.
“I realize this was unfair and thoughtless of me,” Hanson tweeted. “I was speaking tongue in cheek, but I didn’t fully account for how it might be perceived.”
“@TomBrady, I apologize. I assure you, I’m cheering for you in this new role!”
Fans seem to feel the same way but are eager to see Brady step up his game in Week 2.
“Where’s the insight, Tom Brady?” one fan questioned. “It’s noticeably lacking.”
“This is the guy with seven Super Bowl wins,” remarked another. “Tom Brady should engage more in play breakdown before the snap; I want him to call the game like a quarterback.”
Fans were also critical of Hanson’s apology, feeling his remarks were justified. One user wrote, “Good grief, so he can’t handle constructive feedback?” Another added, “He’s been through the ringer this year; he can handle it.”
A third fan noted, “He shouldn’t have to apologize for being right!”
