Kendrick Lamar has announced his upcoming performance at Super Bowl LIX’s halftime show, igniting excitement among his fans and a renewed interest in his longstanding rivalry with Drake.
The feud between the two rappers dates back to 2013 and shows no signs of cooling down, with tensions currently escalating.
This year’s Super Bowl looks set to be a pivotal moment in their ongoing rivalry.
Kendrick took to social media on Sunday to confirm his participation in the halftime show, coinciding with the kickoff of the new NFL season.
Supporters of the Compton-born rapper wasted no time in taking jabs at Drake.
Drake’s recent album, *For All the Dogs*, features a track titled « First Person Shooter, » which includes a line referencing their competitive dynamic:
“Numero U-N-O. Me and Drizzy, this s*** like the Super Bowl.”
Lamar wasn’t pleased with these remarks, and shortly afterwards, he responded in a verse on « Like That, » a track from Metro Boomin and Future’s *We Don’t Trust You* album, where he threw strong insults at both Drake and J. Cole, claiming he would bury their “dogs” in a “pet sematary,” a nod to Stephen King’s 1983 horror novel.
The internet exploded with debate as « beef » trended on social media.
Kendrick’s fans quickly highlighted that it was him who was set to perform at the Super Bowl, drawing the attention back to their ongoing conflict.
One user stated, “Kendrick circling all the way back to the song that kicked off the whole thing for the final death blow; jesus christ, he’s a madman.”
Another user quipped, “Drake: Big as the Super Bowl. Kendrick: …and I took that personally.”
“Kendrick Lamar has the opportunity to do the funniest thing of all time,” remarked another fan.
Both rappers have exchanged fiery diss tracks this year, including Kendrick’s « Not Like Us, » which has garnered over 700 million streams on Spotify alone.
Kendrick also appeared to counter Drake’s cryptic statement about “winning Game 2” on his private Instagram, asserting, “You know it’s only one opportunity to win a championship. No round twos.”
