Caleb Williams delivered on his promise by debuting with fresh nails for his NFL game with the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
The first overall pick from April’s NFL Draft marked a milestone by becoming the first quarterback selected first overall to win in their debut since David Carr led the Houston Texans to victory in 2002.
In his understated debut, Williams threw for a modest 93 yards, completing 14 of 29 attempts and rushing for 15 yards. However, the Bears rallied from a 17-0 deficit, thanks to their defense, to secure a 24-17 victory.
This win is significant for Williams, ending the streak of 15 consecutive quarterbacks selected first overall who failed to win their first game, with 14 losses and one tie.
Now, as a winner in the NFL, the former USC star openly embraced his unique style, displaying his pink-painted nails, a staple from his college days. He has always made it a point to stand out.
So when videos surfaced of Williams during the Bears’ warm-up for their season opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, it was no surprise to see him sporting a fresh set of nails.
He chose an orange hue that complements the Bears’ navy blue and orange uniforms, with a message for Chicago fans as well.
His bright orange nails were inscribed with ‘#18 Da Bears’ in navy blue ink, and fans are hopeful that he will live up to the immense talent he displayed at USC.
« It all started about three years ago, » Williams explained in 2023 regarding his nail painting. « It was my senior year of high school. My mom does nails—let’s just say I’ve been around it my whole life. »
« It’s been a part of my life, and since nobody else does it, I just like to try new things. »
This debut was challenging for Williams, who struggled early on; his first drives resulted in minimal progress, and with the Bears down 17-3 in the third quarter, they needed a spark.
The Bears’ first touchdown of the season came courtesy of Jonathan Owens, husband of gymnast Simone Biles, who charged down a punt and returned it for the score.
« My heart! » Biles posted on social media, showing her excitement after reposting Owens’ touchdown highlight. This isn’t the first instance of her publicly celebrating her husband’s successes.
Apart from his colorful nails, Williams also demonstrated his leadership by leading the team in the tunnel before their much-anticipated season kickoff.
« This is just the first of many wins, » Williams stated in a video shared by the team. « But today, this game is what matters most. Let’s go out there like coach says and kick some butt; it’s business. »
The Bears’ initial drive was uneventful, resulting in a scoreless first quarter. All attention was on Williams as the Titans kicked off, and his first drive only gained seven yards with one completed pass. His second drive came to a halt despite converting on fourth down, leading the Titans to an early 17-0 advantage.
Kicker Cairo Santos was able to put the Bears on the board, followed by Owens’ touchdown that invigorated the Soldier Field crowd. Santos added two more field goals, and after Tyrique Stevenson intercepted Will Levis for another defensive score, Williams contributed with a two-point conversion pass to DeAndre Swift.
With a Heisman-winning background and a solid preseason, Williams brings hope for a bright future to the Bears. The 22-year-old was among six quarterbacks taken in the first round, a record for that round, and he was one of three to start in Week 1. Jayden Daniels, the second overall pick, started for the Washington Commanders, while Bo Nix, who was picked 12th, started for the Denver Broncos.
Drake Maye and Michael Penix Jr. are supporting the starters in New England and Atlanta, respectively, while J.J. McCarthy will miss the season following a knee injury sustained during training.
