Frances Tiafoe prepares to take the court at Arthur Ashe on Friday for a pivotal moment in his career.
He will compete against fellow American Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals of the US Open, where the winner will be the first American man to reach the final since Andy Roddick in 2006.
Support will come from Tiafoe’s family and his girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, who will be cheering him on from the player box at Flushing Meadow.
At 26 years old, Tiafoe has had quite a remarkable journey, growing up as the son of refugees from Sierra Leone and spending his early years sleeping in an office at a tennis center in Maryland.
His girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, has been a significant source of support throughout his career. The couple has been together since 2015.
Broomfield is a former collegiate tennis star; she was named the 2015-16 ACC Freshman of the Year while at Clemson and claimed the 2019 NCAA Division I women’s doubles championship at UCLA.
In addition to her athletic accomplishments, she had a behind-the-scenes role in the film « King Richard, » which stars Will Smith as the father of tennis icons Serena and Venus Williams.
Broomfield served as a body double for the actress portraying Venus Williams in the acclaimed biopic.
Reflecting on her experience, she remarked, “That was a turning point in my life, showing me how I can blend tennis with the entertainment industry. Working alongside Will Smith was surreal.”
Since then, Broomfield has transitioned into a content creator and influencer, boasting around 80,000 followers on Instagram.
“I’m involved in many aspects of tennis without constantly competing,” she shared.
“I still have a passion for the sport, having spent over 20 years in it. The rise of social media allows players to earn significantly more off the court than on it. I’m able to merge both worlds.”
The connection between them appears to be strong.
“We really complement each other well,” Broomfield shared with the ATP.
“We often discuss tennis, and since I played too, I can provide insight when we talk about matches and players.”
“We both understand what it takes to compete at the highest levels,” she added.
On Friday night, Fritz and Tiafoe will clash, ensuring a home player makes it to the men’s final for the first time since Roddick lost to Roger Federer 18 years ago.
This match also marks the first all-American semi-final in a men’s Grand Slam since 2005.
There’s now a genuine shot for an American champion in New York for the first time in 21 years. Tiafoe expressed mixed feelings about advancing to this stage due to Grigor Dimitrov’s injury but acknowledged his excitement: “I’m thrilled to be here again for another semi-final. It’s incredible, » he stated. “That was a high-level match, and I felt strong, but I didn’t want it to end that way.”
He continued, “But now everyone can look forward to my match against another American. Friday is going to be a memorable day.”
Tiafoe referred to the upcoming match as the ‘biggest’ of his and Fritz’s careers.
« We have known each other since we were 14 and have been playing against each other for ages, » Tiafoe shared.
“Competing against him here, in such a monumental match, is truly exciting. I can’t wait and will give it my all.”
