Frank Warren has outlined how Daniel Dubois could achieve a surprising victory over Anthony Joshua later this month.
The two British heavyweights are scheduled to meet at Wembley Stadium on September 21, with Joshua seen as the clear favorite against IBF champion Dubois.
While the pair have sparred together several times in the past, this fight will mark their debut against each other in a professional setting.
This match will also be Dubois’ first experience at Wembley, whereas Joshua has fought at the iconic venue three times before.
Both fighters enter the ring with unbeaten records after suffering defeats to Oleksandr Usyk, who held the undisputed heavyweight title before vacating the IBF belt in June—now in Dubois’ possession.
Joshua lost to Usyk by unanimous and split decision in September 2021 and August 2022, respectively, while Dubois was stopped by Usyk in August of last year.
However, Dubois has arguably faced tougher opposition since his defeat to Usyk, having secured victories over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic, with Hrgovic testing Dubois’ resilience with powerful punches.
In contrast, Joshua’s recent wins include a knockout of 39-year-old Robert Helenius, a dominant decision against Otto Wallin, and a quick finish of MMA legend Francis Ngannou in just two rounds.
Warren believes that Dubois’ experience from facing Hrgovic makes him more battle-tested than Joshua, suggesting that this could be a crucial factor in the fight.
« I see it in two ways, » Warren stated to BoxingScene.
« First of all, Wallin didn’t want to be there. Ngannou was cautious and did what he had to do. But Joshua hasn’t faced any real quality opposition recently, and he hasn’t taken a solid punch yet. I want him to come out swinging those right hands, as that’s where he’s vulnerable.
« He gets countered easily, and that will be the decisive moment. It’s not about knocking him out, but about how he reacts to a solid punch when it lands. »
Warren further remarked: « If Joshua gets hit, he tends to retreat, and if he does that, it plays into my guy’s hands. »
The winner of the Dubois-Joshua bout will be positioned to face the victor of the Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury rematch.
Neither fighter has yet faced the Gypsy King, who is also part of Warren’s Queensberry promotion.
However, the prospect of avenging their defeats against Usyk, who previously defeated Fury, will undoubtedly motivate both Dubois and Joshua.
