The drama in Dallas is far from over, but the responsibility ultimately lands on head coach Mike McCarthy’s shoulders.
Entering his fifth year with the franchise after three consecutive winning seasons, McCarthy is aware that anything short of a Super Bowl appearance could lead to his exit from Arlington.
This offseason has been characterized by contract negotiations for Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, and Dak Prescott, with Lamb securing a record-breaking deal.
Lamb has finally signed, Prescott is in the last year of his contract, and Parsons is entering the fourth year of his rookie deal, expecting to be paid among the top defensive players in the league.
All of this is unfolding under the leadership of head coach McCarthy, who himself is in the final year of his contract. Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has been speculated as a potential successor.
This unique situation for the team and its owner, who thrive in the limelight, has led former Cowboys special teamer Jason Bell to believe that it may be McCarthy who faces the ultimate consequence.
« He’s in a challenging position, and I believe he is aware of it, » Bell told talkSPORT.
« Despite their success in the regular season, the emphasis is on what happens in the postseason – they must achieve playoff victories.
« A Super Bowl run is a must. While they don’t necessarily have to win it, there needs to be significant optimism. Jerry is looking for at least one extra playoff game. He wants everyone discussing their potential for the Super Bowl title. »
« If Mike McCarthy fails to deliver, he could be next on the chopping block. He’s already made significant coaching changes, including offensive and defensive coordinators, one of whom left for a head coaching position.
« The pressure is now on him. He’s taking over play-calling duties with Mike Zimmer. They need to achieve success, or Belichick could be getting a call from Jones. »
With Lamb’s new agreement secured, Bell anticipates that Prescott will soon follow suit with a new contract, as leaving in free agency would be a significant loss.
As McCarthy’s future remains uncertain, Prescott may also find himself in a waiting game, especially since his next deal could potentially break NFL history.
Ultimately, whether this deal occurs in Dallas or elsewhere depends on Jerry Jones.
« Jerry Jones is adept at ensuring his team stays in the spotlight, » Bell remarked.
« The Cowboys are constantly part of the conversation, and for a reason: they are the top sports franchise. Discussion about them is inevitable. Perhaps he will make the necessary payments as he always does. »
« It’s essential not to take this situation personally. When looking at Dak Prescott, you have to consider the team dynamics. Who else could they possibly recruit that would provide the same level of success? After committing so much to Lamb, not having a capable quarterback would be the worst-case scenario. »
« They need someone who can deliver the ball effectively. I believe everything will work out well for Dak. »
Belichick was previously linked with various teams following his departure from the New England Patriots after a remarkable 24-season tenure that produced six Super Bowl victories.
Although the 72-year-old may not be on the sidelines, he has kept himself highly visible through frequent appearances on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s ManningCast, Inside the NFL, and contributions to Underdog Fantasy and The 33rd Team, ensuring the spotlight remains on him as coaches risk their jobs.
The Cowboys kick off their season on the road against the Cleveland Browns this Sunday, coinciding with Tom Brady’s debut as an announcer.
As if the pressure wasn’t already immense for Dallas.
