Jadon Sancho has referred to Jurgen Klopp as a ‘legend,’ shortly after the German coach publicly defended the winger.
The 23-year-old England international departed Manchester United on loan this summer, joining Chelsea on a season-long deal that includes an obligation to make the transfer permanent for £25 million.
Klopp, who left Liverpool at the end of the last season, took over as coach of Sancho’s former club Borussia Dortmund for the testimonial of Lukasz Piszczek and Jakub Blaszczykowski last Saturday.
Reacting to a video of Klopp receiving an enthusiastic reception from fans, Sancho commented, “Legend!”
This week, Klopp reportedly disagreed publicly with Manchester United’s management of Sancho, emphasizing the need for managers to support players in tough times.
“If the whole world loses trust in the player, the manager should stand by him. I can’t simply accept the idea that he’s wasteful, like some clubs do—buying a player for £80 million and then loaning him out!” Klopp remarked regarding Sancho.
Sancho’s praise for Klopp suggests he appreciates the coach’s stance.
His transfer to Chelsea marks a fresh start after a turbulent period at Manchester United, where a public fallout with manager Erik ten Hag left their relationship strained.
Previously excluded from Ten Hag’s plans, Sancho secured a loan move back to Dortmund before returning to Manchester this summer.
Ten Hag has since stated that any issues between him and Sancho have been resolved.
Despite hopes for a turnaround, Sancho found himself omitted from matchday squads before finalizing his loan to Chelsea.
According to talkSPORT, there was a possibility of a swap deal involving Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling, but Sterling eventually signed with Arsenal on loan instead.
