Following a somewhat lackluster performance at Euro 2024, some critics suggest that Cristiano Ronaldo is starting to be eclipsed by a rising generation of football talent.
Nonetheless, the 39-year-old remains unparalleled in at least one aspect of the game, as highlighted by his former teammate Roy Keane.
Keane commended Ronaldo for his remarkable career and his sustained effectiveness, especially after the Portuguese star achieved a significant milestone in his country’s Nations League match against Croatia recently.
The Al Nassr player netted the second goal, securing a 2-1 win for Portugal in Lisbon.
This goal was particularly special as it marked his 900th career goal and his 131st for Portugal.
It also represented a stark contrast to his scoreless performance at Euro 2024, during which he did not find the net.
Prior to this, Ronaldo had scored at every major tournament he participated in—until the disappointment in Germany.
During a discussion on ITV Sport after the Nations League match, Keane reflected on Ronaldo’s lack of impact at the Euros.
« That was a bit of an issue, » he acknowledged.
« But (he’s reached) 900 goals, » he reminded viewers, underscoring the significance of the achievement.
« If the ball is in the right areas, he’s still the best in the world, » Keane added, highlighting Ronaldo’s exceptional finishing ability.
Instead of resting on his achievements, Ronaldo has expressed his ambition for an even greater milestone.
« I want to reach 1,000 goals, » he stated in a candid conversation with Rio Ferdinand on his new YouTube channel.
« As long as I stay injury-free, that’s my top priority. I want that. »
However, it seems unlikely that he will add to his tally at the upcoming major tournament, the 2026 World Cup.
Ronaldo also shared that participating in another global event isn’t necessarily high on his agenda.
« For me, winning the Euros equates to winning a World Cup, » he remarked. « I’ve already secured two trophies for Portugal that I truly desired. »
« I’m not driven by that. What motivates me is the joy of playing football, and the records will follow as a natural consequence. »
