Angus Gunn’s previous social media comments have come back to haunt him after Scotland’s Nations League loss to Portugal.
The Tartan Army faced a painful defeat as Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning 88th-minute winner, leading his team to a 2-1 victory and inadvertently proving the Scotland goalkeeper wrong.
Ronaldo turned the game around for his national team after coming off the bench at halftime, netting his remarkable 901st career goal by converting a fierce cross from Nuno Mendes.
Although Gunn couldn’t prevent the crushing blow, it didn’t stop fans from resurfacing an old tweet he made regarding the Portuguese legend, a sentiment he might now regret.
In a now-deleted December 2011 tweet, a 15-year-old Gunn stated, “Ronaldo has been very poor,” accompanied by the hashtag ‘not what he was.’
A screenshot of this poorly-timed message quickly circulated among fans, and it has since been erased from his account.
The tweet coincided with Real Madrid’s 3-1 defeat to Barcelona at the Bernabeu.
At the time, Ronaldo was 26 years old and arguably at his peak, having just earned the European Golden Shoe for scoring 40 goals in La Liga during the 2010/11 season with Real Madrid.
Given his subsequent achievements, it’s undeniable that Ronaldo has more than proven Gunn wrong.
Initially, Ronaldo had just one Ballon d’Or to his name when the tweet was published, but he has since secured an additional four prestigious awards and amassed four more Champions League titles to his 2008 victory with Manchester United, along with international triumph at Euro 2016 with Portugal.
Now recognized as the greatest goalscorer in history, the 39-year-old shows no signs of slowing down, having reached the remarkable 900-goal milestone in his previous match against Croatia.
For Gunn, the online focus following Scotland‘s defeat adds to his disappointments.
After Scotland took an early lead with Scott McTominay‘s goal in the seventh minute, Gunn’s failure to stop Bruno Fernandes‘ equalizing shot compounded his troubles.
Gunn deflected Fernandes’ left-footed strike from 20 yards into the net, swinging the momentum of the match.
He redeemed himself with a key double-save against substitute Joao Felix late in the game, while Ronaldo came close to scoring, hitting the post twice in the final ten minutes.
Ultimately, though, it was Ronaldo who triumphed, sealing the win for Portugal with a decisive touch in the dying moments of the match.
Meanwhile, Gunn is likely left reflecting on the regrettable comments he made years ago.
