Edgar Berlanga has responded to Oscar De La Hoya’s criticism of his upcoming fight with Canelo Alvarez, which De La Hoya labeled a ‘snoozefest.’
Canelo is scheduled to defend his WBA, WBC, and WBO super-middleweight titles against Berlanga on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The matchup has sparked mixed reactions, with some boxing insiders arguing that Berlanga hasn’t faced enough high-level opponents to deserve a title shot against the defending champion.
De La Hoya has emerged as one of the fiercest critics, continuing his long-standing feud with Canelo that began after the latter’s acrimonious split from Golden Boy Promotions in 2021.
« I’m the PPV king, and the @Canelo vs @EdgarBerlangaJr fight won’t surpass 100k buys, » he tweeted. « No one is shelling out $90 for this snooze fest. Just stating the facts. »
Berlanga took offense to De La Hoya’s remarks, responding: « How can a scumbag like Oscar hate on me and the event? You’re someone many fighters looked up to. You are a f***ing w***er @OscarDeLaHoya. »
Initially, the IBF had mandated that Canelo face mandatory challenger William Scull next. However, the former pound-for-pound champion opted for Berlanga instead, believing it would be more financially beneficial. Consequently, Canelo lost his IBF title and his undisputed status at 168 lbs.
A vacant IBF title bout was subsequently arranged between Scull and Vladimir Shishkin.
The fight is anticipated for October 19 in Falkensee, Germany, as part of an event co-promoted by Agon Sports and Kuc Boxing.
In response to Canelo’s choice not to fight him, Scull remarked: « Maybe this wasn’t the right moment, and Canelo thought, ‘Let’s wait on the Cuban until he gains more recognition, and see if he becomes a champion so we can unify.' »
« That could be beneficial for me as it allows for a great business opportunity, » he added. « Becoming a world champion and then unifying with Canelo would create a unique legacy. » Sympathizing with Scull, he expressed his desire for a matchup to occur soon, but acknowledged that it might happen later.
Should Canelo not face the Scull-Shishkin winner, speculation continues about a potential bout with Terence Crawford. This fight has been a top priority for HE Turki Alalshikh, the chief of Saudi boxing, who recently asserted that Crawford isn’t interested in any other fights.
