St Leger Betting Tips
- CHAMPAGNE STAKES
1.50: Aomori City 9/4 - PARK STAKES
3.00: Lake Forest 7/1 each-way - ST LEGGER
3.40: Illinois 7/4
Aomori City
Aomori City performed impressively at Goodwood, finishing ahead of Wolf Of Badenoch and Cool Hoof Luke, who later secured another win. The Godolphin-owned two-year-old is poised to deliver a significant victory for trainer Charlie Appleby, as his form, particularly against Whistlejacket, has shown promise.
Lake Forest
Lake Forest is stepping up to 7f for the first time, having previously shown solid form against Group 1 competitors such as Inisherin and Elite Status. A non-runner in the Celebration Mile Stakes due to soft ground, he may encounter similar conditions at Doncaster. With odds of 7/1, the colt trained by William Haggas could regain momentum after his win in the Gimcrack Stakes at York last year.
Illinois
Ten contenders are set to line up for the nearly £400k St Leger on Saturday afternoon. You Got To Me has been supplemented for the race at a cost of £50k, highlighting connections’ confidence in her abilities, despite being the only filly in the race, carrying 9st against the colts at 9-3.
Illinois is expected to lead the odds for trainer Aidan O’Brien, who also has Jan Brueghel and Grosvenor Square as the second and third favorites. Jan Brueghel’s recent win over Bellum Justum was significant, not only for his performance but as Bellum Justum went on to win convincingly at the Nashville Derby. Despite some initial challenges, Jan Brueghel secured a commendable win, making it three wins in three for the Galileo colt. However, he will be stepping up from 1m4f to 1m6f+ for the first time, a distance that appears to suit Illinois and a few others with strong pedigree including Grosvenor Square, Align The Stars, and Wild Waves.
While there is strong reason to favor Illinois, the betting market has taken into account the colt’s previous performances, including two second-place finishes. With Los Angeles now targeting the Irish Champion Stakes instead of the St Leger, Illinois’s chances further improve.
