« That’s the reason fans admire him, » – Dana White comments on Alex Pereira’s plans ahead of his title defense at UFC 307.

Dana White is not shocked that Alex Pereira is considering a return to middleweight.

The reigning light heavyweight champion is set to defend his title against rising contender Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 307 on October 5.

Meanwhile, the former middleweight champion has been eyeing a matchup with 185-pound champion Dricus du Plessis ever since he defeated Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 last month.

Pereira shared his intentions with Dana White after the latest episode of the Contender Series on Tuesday, which showcased a potential KO of the Year contender.

White did not provide a clear indication of what lies ahead for ‘Poatan,’ but he appreciates the Brazilian knockout artist’s readiness to take on any challenger, anywhere, at any time.

“My perspective on him is that he’s incredibly tough,” White said.

“He’s willing to move up or down in weight classes. That’s the kind of fighter that people love.”

White emphasized that Pereira’s flexibility in changing weight classes opens up a plethora of thrilling matchups for the UFC.

The 37-year-old has even hinted at the possibility of fighting at heavyweight in the future.

White added: “This is why I mentioned earlier that fans adore him. It gives us numerous options during matchmaking—‘Should we do this? Should we do that?’”

“It’s a good problem to have with a guy like him. He even accepts last-minute fights while on vacation!”

“Everything about Alex Pereira is what makes fans absolutely love him.”

Pereira hasn’t fought at middleweight since he was knocked out by Adesanya at UFC 287 in April 2023.

The 6ft 4in fan favorite has struggled with cutting down to 185 pounds, and du Plessis has cautioned him that a return to the division may not be favorable.

“I don’t think Alex Pereira should drop down to 185 lbs,” du Plessis commented after his victory at UFC 305.

“If he wants to, fine, but then we might hear excuses.”

“We saw Izzy drop him in the first round. I felt Izzy’s power that night. He has exceptional timing and great combinations, but if Izzy can stop you like that, you must know that I will be a tough challenge for you.”

“Especially if you come in making excuses about weight cutting; everyone will talk about that.”
