Manchester United supporters humorously expressed their desire for Michael Carrick to step in for Casemiro in midfield following his impressive performance against Celtic.
The former Red Devils player and coach returned to Old Trafford on Saturday to take part in the club’s legends match against the Scottish side.
Former captain Wayne Rooney also made headlines by showcasing his skill with a sensational free kick goal.
Fans noticed not only Rooney’s stellar performance but also Carrick’s impressive display, sparking conversations about his potential return to the team.
Since retiring in 2018, Carrick has transitioned into management, initially serving as Manchester United’s assistant coach before taking the reins at Middlesbrough.
However, after his standout showing on Saturday, it is evident that the 43-year-old still possesses the ability to make a significant impact in midfield.
Manchester United fans were so impressed by his playmaking and movement that they are calling for him to take Casemiro’s place.
One supporter tweeted: “Terminate Casemiro’s contract ASAP and bring Carrick in as player/manager.”
Another added: “Michael Carrick could step on the pitch and deliver a better performance than Casemiro. »
A third fan chimed in: “One-year contract for Carrick to replace Casemiro—who would say no?”
Casemiro has had a tough season so far, contributing to two of Liverpool’s goals during their 3-0 victory over United last weekend.
Manager Erik ten Hag substituted him at halftime, which led former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher to suggest he should “leave before football leaves him” in his post-match analysis.
Many Manchester United fans believe the club has not replaced Carrick with a player of equal caliber since his retirement.
One fan remarked on X: “Man United still hasn’t found someone to fill his shoes.”
Carrick, who joined Manchester United in 2006 under Sir Alex Ferguson, had a successful tenure, playing 464 matches and securing multiple titles.
During his time, he contributed to the team’s Premier League victories in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2013, as well as winning the Champions League in 2008, the League Cup in 2009, 2010, and 2017, the FA Cup in 2016, and the Europa League in 2017.
