Atkinson became the third England cricketer to score a century and take five wickets in an innings of the same Test. Joe Root also shined, scoring hundreds in both innings to set a new record for England. Sri Lanka struggled, despite fifties from Chandimal, Karunaratne, and captain de Silva. Atkinson’s outstanding performance earned him a place on the Lord’s honours boards once again. Sri Lanka admitted to errors in their performance and have a chance for redemption in the third Test at The Oval.
